Vienna Patent Office

The European Patent Office in Vienna - located between Belvedere Palace and the Botanical Gardens - is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment. The building will be stripped back to its original concrete skeleton and rebuilt according to the designs of ATP architekten ingenieure. All concrete work on the project will be realised exclusively with CO2-reduced recycled concrete, which reduces the CO2 footprint and the consumption of resources.

The Vienna branch of the European Patent Office is also designed to be sustainable through the use of renewable energy and energy recycling. The climate-positive building utilises a geothermal system with 19 geothermal probes and a heat pump. The remaining energy requirements are covered by a large-scale photovoltaic system and an internal storage system. Overall, a CO₂ sink is even created: the solar system generates more energy than the building consumes and the surplus energy is fed into the electricity grid.
