A new sports centre with an indoor swimming pool and an athletics training hall is being built in the immediate vicinity of the former Prinz Leopold barracks. The joint planning and construction of both projects has made it possible to optimise synergy effects in the areas of construction, energy supply and operation. Among other things, up to 6,000 m³ of recycled concrete will be used in the Sportpark Ost, with the proportion of recycled concrete in the various components averaging around 40%. The material comes from the demolished buildings of the former Prinz Leopold barracks in the neighbourhood.
The heat supply is 100% CO2-neutral via collectors installed on the car parks and the water obtained is temporarily stored in a buffer tank with a volume of 500 m³. A wood chip heating system ensures that seasonal peaks in consumption are covered. Electricity is obtained directly from the solar panels on the roofs. There is also a rainwater cistern with a capacity of 20 m³, which uses the collected rainwater to irrigate the façade greenery and green areas.
