On the site of the former slaughterhouse in Karlsruhe's Oststadt district, the Festigungs- und Expansionszentrum, or FUX for short, has recently provided the city's creative and start-up scene with a new place to work. The two-part reinforced concrete building block with 4-6 stories has a clearly structured facade grid. In keeping with the desired industrial character, the reinforced concrete surfaces in the interiors are deliberately left raw.
The exposed concrete ceilings are used for the application of a building component activation, both for heating in winter and for cooling in summer. A heat pump receives the thermal energy for this via a geothermal system consisting of a total of 15 geothermal probes with depths between 90 and 130 meters below the building. A heat transfer medium circulates in this closed circuit, extracting heat from the ground for heating in winter. In summer, on the other hand, thermal energy from the building is fed into the subsoil, thus thermally regenerating it. This system is supplemented by a decentralized cooling system with room dehumidification in the seminar area as well as a few conventional radiators to cover peak loads in winter. Ventilation is provided manually via the windows. (Text source: www.baunetzwissen.de in shortened form)
