Korbach Town Hall

With the demolition and new construction of the town hall, the current approaches of urban mining and circular construction were trialled in a solid building. Not only was it possible to utilise the existing building as a source of raw materials, but the building also serves as an easily accessible material store for future generations in the event of demolition. The knowledge gained from this construction project forms the basis for the development of a ‘Guideline for resource-conserving construction in the state of Hesse’.

The town hall of Korbach, a central building in the old town centre, was demolished and redesigned due to structural defects in the 1970s extension. The new building complements the historic town hall from the 14th century with modern gabled architecture and creates a new urban communication space.

Around 5,400 tonnes of broken concrete from the ceilings, beams and columns of the existing building were used as recycled aggregate type 1 for the supporting structure of the new building. 23 tonnes of broken bricks were used in the façade of the new building. The fines were used to backfill the excavation pit on site.

The use of high-quality exposed concrete instead of plaster and the avoidance of bonded waterproofing of components in contact with the ground by using waterproof concrete ensured recyclability at the end of the building's life cycle. The ‘closed-loop’ roof covering in the form of standing seam zinc roofing and the detachably attached insulation also ensure recyclability for future generations.

The knowledge gained from the project was incorporated into a guideline for resource-conserving construction in Hesse.
