Hensel barracks Villach

As part of the Hensel barracks project, five buildings were dismantled with the aim of securing as many components as possible for reuse. The dismantling included floor coverings, ceilings, fluorescent tubes, door panels and wood panelling. BauKarussell catalogued the inventory and made it available to regional buyers. In addition, re-use days were organised where the local population and neighbouring businesses were able to view and remove the components. Some of the furniture and equipment was passed on to charitable organisations, while regional carpentry firms made it possible to reuse the wooden vehicle shelters. Historic ÖBB railway carriages were prepared for recycling by a scrap dealer.

Of a total of 176 tonnes of material, over 60%, i.e. 109 tonnes, were reused and 47 tonnes were recycled. Around 500 hours of socio-economic work were carried out as part of the project, employing people furthest from the labour market and integrating them into the work process. The project makes an important contribution to the circular economy and shows how sustainable resource utilisation can be successfully implemented in large-scale projects.
