Magdas Hotel
As part of an extensive conversion, a former priest's residence was transformed into a hotel with 85 rooms, a restaurant, a pub garden and a guest garden. The magdas Hotel in Vienna is based on the principles of the circular economy in many respects. It is the first social business hotel in Austria and aims to offer job prospects to people with a refugee background. In cooperation with specialists from the hotel industry, they are given both work opportunities and training places. The hotel also attaches great importance to sustainability. This is reflected, among other things, in the use of recycled materials, reused furniture and the installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof, geothermal probes in the ground and a garden instead of car parking spaces in front of the building.

Project participantsDuring the remodelling of the former building, a large proportion of the old materials and furniture were reused or recycled, reflecting the principles of the circular economy. The aim was to preserve the style of the building from the late 1960s with its restrained yet elegant architecture. For example, the black and green stone floor in the entrance area was retained, as was a curved reception desk, which is now part of the new bar, and some vintage-style furniture. And the beautiful old lift, although refurbished, remains visually unchanged in the foyer. Some outdated weaknesses, such as in the building physics, had to be rectified, of course. BWM Designers & Architects was responsible for the general refurbishment of the building; for a completely overhauled sound and building services including heating and ventilation systems; as well as for the addition of an escape staircase.
The furnishings were also designed to minimise the use of resources. Old lamps were repaired, the former reception desk was turned into a new bar and (Franz Schuster) chairs were simply taken from the hotel in the Prater. The confessional of a former Caritas nursing home was converted into wall panels for the magdas LOKAL.
